Wind causes spike in dust levels

THERE were major air pollution problems at Singleton, Maison Dieu and Camberwell on Wednesday, particularly around 10pm.

New South Wales environment department monitors showed that all three sites failed daily average national health standards at this time.

In addition, daily average air health alerts were issued for Singleton at 1pm, at Maison Dieu at 6pm and Camberwell at 4pm.

The monitors record fine suspended particles that damage people’s respiratory tracts.

Wednesday’s problem was in line with often expressed public concerns that the air quality around Singleton was, at times, noticeably worse at night.

The government alerts do not reveal peak pollution times or say whether the pollution was in the poor, very poor or hazardous range on the government’s scale.

Meanwhile, a study into the contents of the dust particles will begin this year by Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation and the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology.

Preliminary results should be known by June.
